Tired students? Tips for teacher by Powtoon

You know how you feel when you’re totally exhausted? That stiff neck or headache that you feel after concentrating too long on one task...and the only thing you want to do is collapse into a pile of freshly fluffed pillows? But of course, you don’t - because you can’t. You have to be in class, even when you’re tired. And guess what? Your students sometimes feel the exact same way that you do. In fact, exhaustion in children is a major cause of disruptive behavior, lack of focus and difficulty in completing tasks.

Quick Tip #3 (out of 5): Classroom YogaWhen you see your class’ energy has dropped - get physical and guide them through a ‘4 minute - 4 poses’ Yoga session.
Yoga has a dual power. It relaxes and re-energizes by simultaneously focusing on the mind and body...which is EXACTLY what your students crave. Here are 4 specific poses to use in your class:
  • CHAIR POSE is great for circulation, especially for your hands and feet. Squat and raise your hands as though you’re about to pray. This will increase the flow of oxygen to your brain cells as well as the rest of your body.
  • KING DANCER POSE is sure to crack some smiles. Grab one leg behind you and reach to the sky with your free hand. this pose not only boosts serotonin levels but actually helps decrease the notorious stress hormone cortisol.
  • RAG DOLL POSE i.e the bend down and hug yourself pose, requires students to close their eyes and focus only on themselves. Even one moment of increased self-awareness can have a lasting impact on the rest of their day.
  • TREE POSE is easy! Just raise your hands together over your head and lift one leg into it’s opposing knee. This aligns the spine and helps your students posture, which has been linked to increased productivity.
  • The best way to learn these poses is with visuals, so create your own Yoga PowToon and re-energize your class (we’ve had dozens of teachers rave about how their Yoga PowToons have restored classroom management and focus).
